Need Help With Getting a New Computer

What to consider when buying a computer? Here are few things to look for when buy a new computer:

Getting new technology can be very exciting but with so many choices it can also be a bit overwhelming. The excitement can really be dampened if you find out you didn’t get the computer you needed.

Before you start your purchase it may be good idea to evaluate your need.

  1. 1. Ask yourself what you need your computer for. The main functionality of your computer will dictate the kind of computer that you need. It’s important to understand the role your computer will be filling so that you don’t buy something that is not needed, or end up with a computer that has enough to fill you needs.
    • Will you be using the computer mainly to check email and browse the web?
    • Are you planning on doing a significant amount of office work on your computer?
    • Do you enjoy games and plan on spending most of your computer time playing the latest and greatest releases?
    • Are you an artist or musician? You may need to anticipate using the computer to create images, music, or videos?
    • Is your computer going to be used by everyone in the family? Are you planning for this computer to be an entertainment hub for the living/family room?
  2. 2. Desktop, Laptop, portable? Laptops are not usually great for gaming. Desktops generally have more power but they also cost more and take up more space in a room as well.
    • How tied down do you want to be to a desk. Laptops will allow you to work from virtually anywhere that you can charge or get a Wi-Fi internet connection.
    • Choosing a laptop, you need to pay attention to how much battery life you will have because the will determine how mobile you can be.
  3. 3. Do you get a MAC or a PC? In general this is a preference issue. Most musicians and artists like MACs, but games run better on PCs. Macs cost more than PCs. But if your office uses only MACs then you may need to consider this if you plan to work from home.
  4. 4. Balance your needs with your budget. Notebooks are really not expensive but gaming processors are quite costly.
  5. 5. Research the components that will be important for your Computer. Will an off-the-shelf work for you or will you need a custom built PC? Most PCs now can be found in stores with lots of memory and storage but sometimes if you are saving art files you may need more memory and storage as well as speed.
